Biden has done a horrible job handling the border crisis. Though he hasn’t been in office long, he has already made a bunch of mistakes that show that he isn’t qualified. He’s brought up a lot of bad memories from the Obama administration, and the border crisis is going to continue over his tenure as well. It has already been a rough time for those stuck along the borderline.
The border crisis is going to affect not only those fleeing from violence and persecution but also those who are seeking refuge from poverty or political unrest due to natural disasters. This generates an atmosphere of fear and resentment among Americans as we see what we perceive as “the other” coming into our country. Biden was not prepared to deal with the crisis. According to Politico, Biden honestly believed that he could wave a magic wand and get immigration reform passed.
The administration’s response to the crisis has been slow and ineffective because of this lack of preparation on Biden’s part. After realizing his failure, Biden tried to address other issues in the country like the economic decline in rural areas. The crisis on the border also seems to have escalated the economic decline of rural regions, as many towns are now drying up because of people fleeing violence.
There’s more to this than just the economy, though. The rest of the world is watching what is happening with our borders, and they are upset with what they perceive as American hypocrisy. They see that we are obsessed with enforcing our laws, but then these laws aren’t enforced where it matters most–that’s why many people are fleeing to our nation in the first place. Biden has not helped his case at all by trying to appease both sides of this issue without making any progress whatsoever.
In an interview with CNN, Biden made the argument that the border crisis would be an issue no matter who was in office at the time. He said, “I think if you were to go back and look at other moments in which we have a crisis on our hands or a challenge on our hands — I’ve said repeatedly, I spoke about this earlier — this isn’t about amnesty.” He didn’t say anything new or profound.
Biden wasn’t prepared for his position, and he may have been a better candidate for another position. In an article from The Washington Post, Joe Biden is always seen as the goofy guy who does not take himself seriously. It’s hard to take someone who doesn’t take themselves seriously. He is still doing what he can to get immigration reform passed but has no idea what to do next. He tried sending unaccompanied minors back home, but he realized that it was too expensive and too risky to send these children back alone.
A lot of the kids did not have proper documentation, so they did not have any way of getting into their countries safely. This led Biden to begin building shelters for the children rather than send them back home in dangerous conditions. He also ended up accepting the bill that Republicans had proposed regarding border patrol agents–but when President Obama vetoed it, everyone was confused about what was going on within the government.
This just shows that Biden has no clue what he’s doing. Time for Joe to go.
